Beitzel Corporation is now accepting applications for a full-time Heavy Equipment Operator Apprentice.  The Heavy Equipment Operator Apprentice should be willing to learn to responsibly demonstrate the safe and skillful operation of earth-moving equipment such as excavators, dozers, haul trucks, compactors, loaders, skid steers, bobcats and other pieces of equipment and attachments. Candidate will participate in various types of excavation work to include, but not limited to: large construction, site preparation and development, road work, pad sites, tree clearing and grubbing, underground utility work, grading, trenching, digging, dredging, storm water management, demolition, compaction, slip repair, etc. This position will require a commitment to ongoing education in the skilled trade of equipment operation.

 

The Heavy Equipment Operator Apprentice position will require a flexible work schedule and a willingness to work extended hours to include weekends, holidays, evenings and extensive overnight/out-of-town work as needed. Areas of operations include, but are not limited to: MD, MI, MS, OH, PA, WV, NC, SC, AL, GA, FL, KY, and VA.

Responsibilities

  • Learns to operate heavy equipment such as excavators, backhoes and front end loaders to excavate or move dirt, rock, sand, gravel and other materials
  • Becomes responsible for safe slopes on excavations and proper barricading
  • Learns to locate utilities and other buried lines prior to digging
  • Acquires the knowledge of trenching and shoring standards
  • Inspects and maintains equipment as required
  • Digs, spreads and levels dirt, gravel or sand; and, mixes, pours and spreads concrete and asphalt using hand tools
  • Learns to perform a variety of machine and non-machine tasks such as removing forms, placing pipe in trench, jack hammering, tamping, etc.
  • Learns to exercise proper care, maintenance and operation of company equipment
  • Adhere to all Company Safety Policies

Qualifications

  • General experience in earthwork and heavy equipment operations preferred
  • Skill in operating dozers and excavators preferred but not required
  • Grade experience preferred 
  • Basic knowledge of equipment mechanics and maintenance is preferred but not required
  • Team-oriented and able to work effectively and efficiently with others 

Working Conditions

  • Sit, talk, hear, read, and write
  • Regularly walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.
  • Perform duties on-site and underground at industrial locations.

 

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

This position requires the completion of a thorough background and pre-employment drug and alcohol screening. In accordance with The Company’s Drug and Alcohol policy, employees are required to participate in random, post-accident and reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol testing as requested.
